K.Flay is more than one to watch these days. Combining elements of both indie alternative rock with heavy hip-hop influence, it’s hard not to love everything she’s doing right now. Throw it back a couple years and we find a younger Kristine Flaherty studying away at Stanford University, California, on her way to completing two degrees in psychology and sociology (talk about SMART). Lucky for us, she found music to be more than just an extra-curricular activity between classes.
She began releasing music from her bedroom, and in early 2010 she released her first self-titled EP. The following year she released what she claimed to be the “turning point” in her career, I Stopped Caring In ’96. Over the next year, K.Flay’s genre-defying style enabled her to tour with artists as diverse as Snoop Dog, Passion Pit and Icona Pop. No big deal or anything, right?! As her popularity continued to grow, she caught the attention of RCA Records who ultimately allowed her to release her next two EPs: Eyes Shut & What If It Is, respectively.
But it was not meant to be with RCA, and so she went through the inevitable breakup and started a new fling with her long lost love, the internet. In 2014, K.Flay launched a PledgeMusic campaign and to much success was able to record her DIY album, Life as a Dog. You Go Girl! The success of that album lead to her signing with Night Street Records – a division of Interscope – which can only make us say, Welcome to the Family!!
Fast forward now to our rising alternative hip-hop powerhouse that continuously makes me want to change her name from K.Flay to K.SLAAYY! She has just released her newest EP, Crush Me, along with its catchy AF single, “Blood In The Cut.”
We would HIGHLY recommend you check out the rest of her latest project as it’s giving us all the feels.
Plus, catch her on tour this Fall as she hits up Adelaide Hall in Toronto on November 15th.
