Who would’ve thought?
Song writing is a serious process. It’s much more than a simple recording. It’s the culmination of life experiences that give influence to lyrics and melodies we love most. Music comes from a lot of places: romance, friendship, pain. And sometimes musicians gives us a glimpse into those places. Here are 11 songs that you’d be surprised to learn the true meaning of.
“Gorgeous” by Taylor Swift
Who’s it about? Boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
During her reputation Secret Sessions in the fall, Taylor shared the news directly with fans that her new song was explicitly about current beau Joe Alwyn. It’s a first for Taylor who is notoriously tight lipped about these sorts of details. LOVE IT.
“Ruin the Friendship” by Demi Lovato
Who’s it about? Nick Jonas (speculation)
There are numerous clues hidden through-out that lead us in this direction. In the first line of the song, Demi says “Put down your cigar and pick me up”. It is widely known among Jonas fans that the boys love to smoke cigars. In an interview with Noisey, the singer also confirmed that the song’s inspiration is a fellow singer. Nick and Demi have been friends since they were 16 years old so romantic interest wouldn’t be so far-fetched.
“My My My!” by Troye Sivan
Who’s it about? Boyfriend Jacob Bixenman.
Keeping their romance relatively private, you’ll be surprised to learn these two have been at it for more than a year now. It’s safe to say Troye is seriously in love and when co-writer Leland suggested the lyric “My My My,” Troye knew right away it was exactly what he needed to describe his feelings.
“The Cure” by Lady Gaga
Who’s it about? Her fans
During her headlining set at last year’s Coachella, Gaga told the crowd “I love you guys so much. I have been through so much in my life and I’ve seen so much. And you cure me everything time with your love”.
If that’s not enough evidence, we don’t know what is. The hardship in Gaga’s life is hard to ignore. After she separated from her fiancé Taylor Kinney in 2016, she was faced with the loss of her best friend Sonja Dunham the next year in addition to an ongoing battle with chronic pain. No matter what, Little Monsters have always stuck by her side and this song is living proof of that.
“On My Mind” by Ellie Goulding
Who’s it about? Ed Sheeran
When Ed Sheeran first dropped the song “Don’t,” tabloids were quick to speculate about its influence. Until that point, Sheeran had kept most of her romance under wraps except for a select few. Ellie Goulding was included as one of them and when she dropped her next track, the rumours couldn’t be wrong. Both songs recount a booze-infused hotel experience that ends in heartbreak. Coincidence? We think not.
“Bound 2” by Kanye West
Who’s it about? Kim Kardashian West
Not many would go as far as to include their song’s inspiration in their music video. No doubt, Kanye West is truly one of a kind.
“Bad At Love” by Halsey
Who’s it about? Leonardo DiCaprio
Okay but only technically. When she sat down to write the track with her producer Ricky Reed, she told Reed that she wanted it to “sound like Leonardo DiCaprio in a Hawaiian T-shirt in a droptop yellow convertible car — driving down the highway like in Miami Vice with all his friends.” Did she achieve her goal? We’re gonna go ahead and say YEP.
“Green Light” by Lorde
Who’s it about? Ex-boyfriend photographer James Lowe
During an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, Lorde confessed the song was about heartbreak. She said love was a subject that took her a while to figure out how to write considering she just experienced her first major heartbreak. It might sound selfish of us but we’re glad she did because this song is one of her best.
“Let You Down” by NF
Who’s it about? His parents
For NF, music became an outlet for him to overcome the hardship and pain he experienced growing up with his parents. He lived with his father to avoid the physical abuse from his mother’s boyfriend. He might believe he’s a let down, we say he’s far from it. Don’t you agree? Learn more about the song here.
“LOVE.” By Kendrick Lamar
Who’s it about? His fiancé Whitney Alford
Now you might not know who she is but Whitney is Kendrick’s high school sweetheart and soon-to-be Mrs. Lamar. For the majority of his career, Kendrick has kept his romance out of the spotlight but chooses to share his truth through this heartwarming track.
“The Heart Wants What It Wants” by Selena Gomez
Who’s it about? Justin Bieber… obviously.
Probably the most obvious of the bunch. During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, the singer even spoke of showing the music video to her on-and-off again beau and asking for his thoughts. She said he thought it was beautiful, but added that, “I think he was a little jealous of the video guy at first.” Clearly the heart STILL wants what it wants now that the infamous couple are seemingly back together.
