Dermot Kennedy went from busking on the street to selling out shows on a global scale.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Dermot Kennedy has quickly made a name for himself on the music scene. Dermot released his debut EP, Dancing Under Red Skies, back in 2013, but it wasn’t until 2016 that he found viral success with his track “After Rain.”
With his fanbase growing rapidly and eagerly awaiting new music from the artist, Dermot released his follow-up EP, Doves & Ravens, in 2017. This release further catapulted his deserved rise on the scene as a singer-songwriter.
But what makes Dermot different from the rest? It’s a combination of his vulnerable lyrics and gritty, yet sultry vocal ability that has people investing in his music after their first listen. With huge names like Taylor Swift and Travis Scott showing their appreciation for Dermot’s music, one would be hard-pressed not to appreciate his talent.
Speaking to GQ about working with super producer Mike Dean who has also worked with hip-hop heavyweights like Jay-Z and Kanye West, Dermot said:
“Seeing that Mike and the other younger, serious hip hop guys in the studio were into my songs was really exciting. Travis Scott was there on Facetime and he was listening to it as well.”
These names really attest to the variation of fans that Dermot attracts. His sound doesn’t quite fall into one singular category which has lead people who enjoy a plethora of genres to continually stream his music and snap up tickets to his sold out shows.
With an album on the way next year and over 300 million global streams, it’s safe to assume that Taylor Swift will soon have many more Dermot Kennedy songs to add to her ‘Songs Taylor Loves’ playlist.
