2 Chainz has released his new album Rap or Go to the League. Inspired by the rapper getting a helping hand from the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James on the EP, here are iconic basketball moments from our favourite musical artists:
J Cole Dunks
J Cole went platinum with no features, but did you know that he can hoop? Before his rap career took off, the Dreamville artist was serious ball player. Ultimately, he decided to leave his hoop dreams behind to focus on his music, which worked out pretty well. Still, if his performance in the 2012 NBA Celebrity All Star Game is any indication, J Cole can still ball:
Impressive, right? J Cole tried to dunk again at the 2019 NBA All Star Dunk Competition, and the results were…not as good:
It was a nice attempt!
Drake and the modern day Toronto Raptors have become synonymous with each other. When the Raptors are in the playoffs, Drake, who serves as the team’s Global Ambassador, is always court side to support his squad. Oftentimes Drake can be seen trash talking opposing players, which may or may not have positively affected the outcome of a few games. Some of those instances can be seen in this ESPN video below:
Drake’s clothing brand OVO (October’s Very Own) has also teamed up with the team to design special edition Toronto Raptors jerseys. They serve as alternates for the Raptors, who wear them in games once every few weeks. Both iterations of the OVO jersey exhibit the gold branding that OVO has become known for. Check them out below:
Drakes affiliation with the NBA doesn’t stop short at the Toronto Raptors – he is also close friends with a variety of NBA superstars. That includes LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, just to name a few. Drake even hosted the NBA Awards in 2017, which included this hilarious skit with Will Farrell:
Drake vs Kanye West
Speaking of Drake, have you heard about the time his crew faced off against Kanye West’s crew in a game of basketball? The story was told by Ninja from the South African hip-hop group Die Antwoord, and it’s absolutely hilarious. We’re sure some of it is exaggerated, but the video is still essential viewing:
Apart from being an excellent singer, songwriter, and musician, Justin Bieber is also a pretty damn good athlete. He skateboards, he plays ice hockey, and he’s also got some hoop skills. The Biebs has made appearances in the NBA Celebrity All Star Game in 2011 and 2017, the latter of which you can check out highlights for below:
While Justin may not have had as solid of a performance as he would have liked at the 2017 All Star Game, his basketball skills are undeniable. Check out this video of Justin shooting around at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn:
Who could ever forget Katy Perry’s hilarious video for her song “Swish Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj? In the video Katy and a team of misfits face off against a team of brutes in an intense game of basketball. See it for yourself below – our favourite part is at 2:10:
Quavo, one third of the rap group Migos, has some serious, serious basketball talent. Need proof? Look no further than the highlights of the 2018 NBA Celebrity All-Star Game, where the Atlanta native took home MVP honours.
