New Music Friday: BENEE, Crown Lands, Drake and more

Posted on August 14, 2020

Hello music lovers! As always, we’re here to share the latest developments and releases from your favourite artists. This week has truly delivered, covering everything from K-POP, to rock, to rap.

Bonus: tons of amazing music videos were dropped too. Keep scrolling for all the updates and amazing visuals, and check out this feel-good playlist when you’re done 😊!

“Snail” by BENEE

Between Tik Tok domination and being Apple Music’s Up Next featured artist, it’s been a busy summer for the New Zealand singer songwriter. Our girl BENEE is a certified hit maker and she’s delivered once again with her latest track/complete bop “Snail“. Don’t let the title fool you, it’s a refreshingly fun pop song with a retro vibe (nothing lethargic about it). If there’s a contest for making extremely catchy yet entirely unique music, BENEE’s in first place.

Crown Lands (Album) by Crown Lands

It’s a monumental day for the Canadian powerhouse duo with the release of their self-titled debut album, Crown Lands. Transcending the realms of folk and rock, Crown Lands create a desirably distinct sound that commands attention. The 7-track project is a product of their chemistry, passion, and Indigenous heritage. The album’s release coincides with the premier of their stellar music video for “Leadfoot”, which you can watch above.

“If I Hated You” by FLETCHER

Talk about cathartic release. Whether it’s parting ways from a toxic ex or ending a significant friendship saying goodbye isn’t always easy, especially when you still care for that person. FLETCHER translates that experience into musical form on If I Hated You. The track is the latest single from her upcoming project The S(ex) Tapes slated for 9.18. The video (shared above) has a homemade feel and was apparently shot by her ex 😲. We love FLETCHER for her constant vulnerability and that’s only been amplified with this release.

“Le Cap” by Zach Zoya

We’re blown away by Zach Zoya’s latest single, “Le Cap”. Bars are dropped right out the gate and his flow is absolutely insane. The trap beat and tropical melody is a departure from the sound we heard on Slurpee, which merely proves how versatile the Montreal artist is. Zoya is more voracious and focused than ever. He’s been putting in major work and we can’t wait to see it all come to fruition with the release of his debut album, Spectrum scheduled for Fall 2020.

“Past Life” (Remix) by Trevor Daniel, Selena Gomez & Lil Mosey

It’s the song that keeps on giving. Selena and Trevor paired up for the soothingly dreamy remix of “Past Life” a few weeks ago, and now they’ve recruited Lil Mosey to add some more flair and dimension. It’s a collaboration that we didn’t see coming, but are extremely grateful for. The young rapper, who’s been killing it with features and releases of his own brought a trap-inspired sound and a couple verses that we’re already trying to memorize. Listen to the latest remix here.

“Laugh Now Cry Later” by Drake ft Lil Durk

With all the uncertainty in the world, the only thing we know for sure is that Drake does not miss. After a slew of unfinished leaks it feels euphoric to get an absolute gem from the Champagne Papi himself. Drake and Lil Durk linked up for the triumphant smash, “Laugh Now Cry Later“. The music video is already the #1 Trending video on YouTube (somebody give this man an Oscar).

Social media went crazy when Drake hinted at a new song the other day, but Twitter’s been in absolute frenzy after finding out that an album is on the way. The Canadian mogul announced that Certified Loverboy will be out soon, and we’ll be anxiously waiting until it arrives.

Move Away (Album) by Bobby Bazini

With a career spanning over a decade the multi-platinum artist shows no signs of slowing down. Bazini released an entirely new project titled Move Away. This marks the fourth full-length album from the Juno Award nominated singer, and it’s a tribute to his 10-year relationship and career as a musician. The album – which was crafted while travelling around the world possesses an untapped sound with anecdotal lyrics. We love a sentimental project and there’ll be tons of emotions to explore throughout the 13 songs.

“One Star” by deryk

deryk offers a provocative and individual sound blending the best elements of alternative and pop music. Her music is mellow yet poignant and her maturity seems to exceed her relatively recent introduction to the music scene. Her latest single “One Star” plays with the idea of giving people and relationships ratings in the same way you would with a car service or food deliverer (not a bad concept tbh). In our opinion, this song and deryk both get a 10/10.

“100” by SuperM

With a debut album on the horizon (08.25) now is the perfect time to stan this breakout k-pop group. The 7-person troupe consists of SHINee’s Taemin, EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai, NCT 127’s Taeyong and Mark, and WayV’s Lucas and Ten. Their single “100” is the energetic bop you didn’t know you needed. This song literally makes you feel like you can take on the world. If you ever wanted to feel like one of Marvel’s Avengers we’d recommend waking up to this track everyday.

Hope you fall in love with these projects as much as we have. Connect with us on Instagram @umusic for music, updates, contests, memes, and more. See you next week!
