Recap: List of Winners at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards

Posted on October 15, 2020

Last night was one of those big music nights. Lacking a crowd and hosted by Kelly Clarkson just like last year, the Billboard Music Awards didn’t fall short and brought the energy and enthusiasm that only an awards show of this caliber can generate, and once again recognized the work and efforts of tons of artists during the year. Spoilers ahead: if the VMAs were Lady Gaga’s night, last night’s brightest star was Post Malone.

The Show Begins

Billie Eilish won the Top Billboard 200 Album Award for her “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” The runner-ups for this category were Ariana Grande, Khalid, Post Malone and Taylor Swift. Just saying – we wish awards were given to all nominees because those albums are entirely un-skippable!

Later, Eilish jumped on stage again to receive the award for Top Female Artist and Top New Artist, which are an addition to the fantastic year she started when she took the Grammys by storm.

Afterwards, Julia Michaels owned the stage to present the Top Hot 100 Song Award. The competition was certainly fierce with absolute monsters like Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved”, Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” or Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello’s “Señorita”

A carousel of winners

The Top Country Artist Award was claimed by Luke Combs and Lizzo took the Top Song Sales Artist Award (it would be unfair if Post Malone won every single award he was nominated for, right?).

The Mayor of Atlanta presented the Billboard Change Maker Award, which was given to Killer Mike for his social contribution alongside his career, and the Top Latin Artist was awarded to Bad Bunny among fierce competition presented by Anuel AA, J Balvin, Ozuna and Romeo Santos.

Garth Brooks took home the Icon Award, presented by none other than Cher! Speaking of huge names, Khalid went ahead and won Top R&B Artist and Top R&B Male Artist, among other awards. Summer Walker won Top R&B Female Artist leaving Beyoncé and Lizzo as nominees.

TikTok celebrity Addison Rae showed up to claim that Harry Styles got all of your support and won the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, and the K-Pop band BTS will have to split between all of its members the Top Social Artist Award presented by Spencer X. They also aired a pre-filmed performance for the show directly from Seoul!

Demi Lovato takes the stage

Speaking of the subject, one of the many performances of the night was in charge of Demi Lovato, who performed live her latest song “Commander In Chief”, which is now available in all platforms and you can listen here!

Lauren Daigle won the award for Top Christian Artist and none other than Kanye West won four awards including Top Christian Album and Top Gospel Artist, Album and Song.

Justin Bieber didn’t leave empty handed either, for the “Holy” artist won Top Country Song alongside Dan + Shay for their “10,000 Hours”. Dan + Shay also won Top Country Duo/Group. Cardi B took home the award for Top Rap Female Artist, The Chainsmokers won Top Dance/Electronic Artist and “Close To Me” by Diplo, Ellie Goulding and Swae Lee was recognized as the Top Dance/Electronic Song. Speaking of dance music, the boundaries between mediums in entertainment keep getting blurrier, for the Top Dance/Electronic Album Award went to “Marshmello: Fortnite Extended Set”. And don’t count him out yet, for a legend such as Elton John keeps on winning, this time with Top Rock Tour.

The list of winners goes on and on and you’re just a couple of lines above it, but it’s time to start wrapping up and focus on the winners of the night, starting with the most nominated artist, Post Malone.

Post Malone leads the winners

Post Malone was the man of the night, for he won none less than nine awards, including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Album…please just keep ’em coming!

Khalid was another of the big winners taking home five awards, including Top R&B Artist and Top R&B Album.

When talking about the big winners, let’s not forget how fruitful the collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus proved for Lil Nas X, who walked away with four awards! Speaking about four awards, we already mentioned Kanye West as one of the top winners as well , and Billie Eilish was our first featured with three. You know who also won three Billboard Music Awards? Top Country Artist Luke Combs and none other than the Jonas Brothers! The sibling trio walked away recognized with Top Duo/Group, Top Radio Songs Artist and Top Radio Song.

And last but not least, we want to have an honorable mention to the Top Collaboration, one of everyone’s favourite songs all around: Shawn Mendes‘ and Camila Cabello‘s “Señorita”.
