UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA PROMOTES ADAM ABBASAKOOR TO VICE PRESIDENT, COMMERCIAL AFFAIRS AND LABEL PARTNERSHIPS

December 6, 2019 (Toronto, ON) – Universal Music Canada (UMC), the country’s leading music company, is announcing today that effective immediately, Adam Abbasakoor has been promoted to Vice President, Commercial Affairs and Label Partnerships.

Continuing to report to Kristen Burke, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Abbasakoor will now oversee UMC’s Label Partnerships in addition to the Commercial Affairs department, where he has held the title of Vice President since 2011.

“Adam’s deep understanding of the music industry, combined with his passion and leadership have been the foundation for his incredible career success at Universal Music Canada over the past two decades,” said Burke. “His business acumen and ability to seek out mutually-beneficial opportunities for our partners and artists is incredibly valuable, and we’re lucky to have him now leading two of UMC’s key departments.”

Joining Universal Music Canada in 1999, Abbasakoor began his career as a sales and promotions representative in London, ON, before moving to Toronto where he held the roles of Account Executive, Sales Manager and Director of Sales before being named Vice President, Commercial Affairs in 2011. In addition to overseeing all commercial opportunities for UMC artists, Abbasakoor handles the company’s direct-to-consumer business and merchandising division Bravado, which creates innovative products carefully tailored to an artist or brand, such as the successful pop-up shops for Billie Eilish and Elton John that recently took place in downtown Toronto. During his 20-year tenure at UMC, Abbasakoor has been a mentor to many and is an integral member of the company’s leadership team.

“Having worked alongside the Label Partnerships team for years and learned so much from witnessing the incredible work they do with independent distributed labels, I’m honoured to be given this new challenge at Universal Music Canada,” said Abbasakoor. “I look forward to further strengthening the relationships with our label partners and their roster of domestic and international artists in the years to come.”

UMC’s Label Partnerships team has recently seen the promotions of Katie Thornton to Director and Angela De Medeiros to Manager and welcomed two new hires Whitney Pineault, Associate Manager and Tyler Madeley, Coordinator.
