DNCE + Operation = An Epic Interview

Posted on August 17, 2016

DNCE plays a game of Operation and does an interview all at once? We dig it.

We learned a lot about the band, including Joe Jonas’ secret talent, Jack’s favourite dance move and the artist you’ll never expect, who knows all the lyrics to “Cake By The Ocean.” Discover it all below — laughs guaranteed 🙂

They mention P Diddy in “Cake By The Ocean?” They sure do:

I’m going blind from this sweet, sweet craving, whoa
Let’s lose our minds and go fucking crazy
Ah ya ya ya ya I keep on hoping we’ll eat cake by the ocean
Walk for me, baby (walk for me now)
I’ll be Diddy, you’ll be Naomi, whoa

Here’s what ABC reported on the topic:

If you stop bopping to DNCE‘s smash “Cake by the Ocean” for a minute and actually listen to the lyrics, you’ll find that they namecheck “Diddy and Naomi” — that would be Sean “Diddy” Combs and Naomi Campbell.  Why mention those two in the same sentence, when they’re not actually linked in reality?  Joe Jonas says it was all based on a rumor they heard about the rap mogul and the supermodel.

“In the studio we were telling stories and there was this amazing story someone was telling about how Diddy and Naomi have this fascination with each other,” Joe tells ABC Radio. “And every time they see each other, apparently Naomi does a catwalk for Diddy. And I was like, ‘We gotta put that in the song!'”

That’s where the line “Walk for me baby/I’ll be Diddy and you be Naomi, whoah-oh” came from.  As Joe explains, the band is fond of “adding things in” when they’re in the studio. Even the title of the song came from a phrase the song’s producers uttered when they couldn’t remember the name of the cocktail “sex on the beach.”
