It’s a very rare thing if you’re living in 2016 and have yet to hear of Shawn Mendes. However, only a few years ago the name might have not sounded at all familiar! Before something big happened (pun intended), Shawn was a regular kid living in Ontario, posting covers on Vine. Let’s take a little flash back!
Here are 5 Vines that remind us where Shawn Mendes came from & why we first fell in love.
This one came without a visual, but the Amy Winehouse cover was an early intro to the voice we all now know & love:
Shawn was immediately engaged with his fans. I mean come on, singing them a good day with his adorable sister – heart breaker 🙂
These six second videos very quickly became what we waited for! One’s like these, for example:
And one’s like these:
And then the world caught on.
Shawn signed to Island Records, and released the magnificence that is his very first single, “Life of The Party” and our love SKY rocketed:
And we weren’t the only ones loving every second.
“When Island Records signed him in May 2014, Mendes’ clean-scrubbed good looks and campfire-cozy performances on acoustic guitar already had earned him 200,000 followers (and his own hashtag, #shirtlessshawn) on Vine. Thanks to his 2.7 million followers on the platform, his first single, “Life of the Party,” sold almost 150,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen Music, with zero radio promotion. His fans again boosted his debut album, Handwritten, to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in April 2015.” – via. Billboard
Shawn has grown from #shirtlessshawn on Vine to an international pop star in only a few years. Not only is his voice something we can’t turn off, but his attitude, smile and all around humbleness is warming and what keeps the fans around. His story is in the likes of Justin Bieber and 5SOS, and really so inspirational to anyone out there trying to make a name for themselves. Shout out to that social media discovery. 🙂
What’s next for Shawn? This September his second studio album, Illuminate is coming & our excitement is through the roof!!
