LISTEN TO MANIC / OUT NOW

‘Fan Account of the Month’ (#FAOTM) is a fan-appreciation series on UMUSIC!

At UMUSIC, we acknowledge and value the efforts of fans from around the world. The passion, dedication, and love fans have for their favourite artists is something the team at UMUSIC has admired for a long while. For this reason, UMUSIC has decided to feature a fan account every month. This will give our UMUSIC community the opportunity to learn about different fandoms, their hardworking members, and more about the artists!

Fan account: A social media account created by a fan dedicated to a particular piece of pop culture. This series will focus on fan accounts dedicated to artists.

Update account: A fan-run social media source for fan accounts. An update account serves as the main source of updates on a specific artist. An update account will gather all media, promotional items, and information on an artist and share the information with other fans. Think of update accounts as a constantly updated Wikipedia for fans. This series will also focus on update accounts, which are simply larger fan accounts.

February’s fan account of the month features a Halsey fan account: imnothalsey! The account is run by Ashley from Washington D.C., a fan who accredits the acceptance culture within the fandom entirely to Halsey. Ashley has been a fan of Halsey since before the Badlands era and has remained loyal ever since. Running imnothalsey is one of the many ways Ashley is able to show her love, appreciation, and admiration for the ‘You Should Be Sad‘ artist.

The team at UMUSIC asked Ashley questions pertaining to Halsey, her third studio album: Manic, and fan culture. Below are a collection of her answers:

Why are you a fan of Halsey?

I truly admire everything she has done. She is extremely brilliant and has a way with words that I have never seen before. Seriously, I could listen to her talk for hours she’s so captivating! Her music is so inspirational and has gotten me through some of the toughest moments in my life. She is the kindest person on this planet and genuinely tries to get to know all her fans on a personal level which is something you don’t see much of. I’m a fan of hers because of how big her heart is!

You can tell that she pours her heart and soul into everything she does. Whether that be music, art, poetry, activism, etc., she always goes into a project putting in 110% effort and that is something I admire so much. She has been a constant advocate for women, the LGBT+ community, POC, people who suffer with mental illnesses, and the rest of those who struggle to have a voice since the beginning of her career. Halsey has always used her platform for good and continues to inspire through her music, activism, and extremely close relationship with her fans which is why I am honored to be her fan. <3

Describe the entire Manic album in one word.

Cathartic.

How would you describe Halsey fans and the wonderful community you’ve all built?

Halsey fans are some of the most passionate people I have ever met! So many of them are insanely talented, creative, and genuinely super cool people. A lot of us have built extremely close relationships with one another and have made lifelong friendships! I even know people that have moved in together and have met the love of their lives because they met through being a fan of Halsey and it’s amazing! It’s incredible how being a fan of one person can bring so many people together.

Halsey fans are incredibly diverse in so many ways, whether that be sexual orientation, gender, race, age, etc. so it’s great to be apart of a community that’s so accepting to others!

Has Halsey ever interacted with your account?

She’s liked a few posts of mine and put one of my posts on her Instagram story once! I’ve mostly interacted with her on my personal twitter though which she’s followed for a few years through dm’s and replies. All of my interactions with her are so funny and sweet and she always makes my day!

Has your account participated in or started any fan projects?

Yes! I try to organize a streaming party every time she drops a single and create my own playlists that others can use to stream her songs! I also try to come up with a hashtag people can use on Twitter whenever a major event happens, such as a single or album drop, so the word about her music gets around!

Which song do you identify with most on Manic?

‘I HATE EVERYBODY’, ‘3am’, and ‘Still Learning’. I relate to ‘I HATE EVERYBODY’ because I have a tendency to say I hate everyone all the time, just like in the song, when in reality I don’t and am just searching for someone to listen to me.

I identify with ‘3am’ cause its quite literally the time when I’m most awake and have a million thoughts scrambling inside my head and the only time I wanna talk to anyone. The lyric “I’m the worst of my enemies and I don’t really know what to do with me” really hits home for me cause its 100% true in my case haha. The song encompasses the feeling of a need for online validation cause you know things in person are worse and searching to find someone to talk to when you’re feeling that way.

‘Still Learning’ is a song I think we can all relate to in some way or another as well. Although I obviously can’t relate to the aspect in the song where she talks about dealing with fame, I completely relate to the constant struggle of learning to love yourself. It’s a very hard thing to do but I think the most important takeaway is to know that it’s a constant battle that takes time and doesn’t happen overnight. Everyone is still learning to love themselves, even those who seemingly look like they have their lives all put together. As someone who struggles a lot with comparing myself to others and with their self esteem, this song served as an important reminder for me of that fact and comforted me in knowing that it’s okay to feel that way but that it will get better eventually.

Which (Manic) music video is your favourite?

I’d have to say that my favorite music videos from Manic right now are ‘You Should Be Sad’ and ‘Graveyard’.

The ‘You Should Be Sad’ music video has so many iconic homages to other famous female musicians such as Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, Lady Gaga, and Christina Aguilera which is something I just love! The choreography is so fun and Halsey just looks incredible in the video.

The ‘Graveyard’ music video is also my favorite because of how whimsical it looks and how many easter eggs about the album were hidden inside it, such as the Alanis Morissette poster on the wall (who was later revealed to be featured on the album), the reference to 3am on the clock, and her name Ashley above the set of her childhood room which also tuned out to be the name of the intro track! The video also starred Sydney Sweeney who I loved watching on Euphoria, so it was amazing to see them work together since I know how much Halsey loves the show as well!

What’s your favourite Halsey moment?

My favorite Halsey moment was when she played Madison Square Garden during the final instalment of the Badlands Tour in 2016. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to go see her at that show and it was such an iconic moment to witness. I think it had been the biggest venue she had ever played at that time, and it was just amazing to see her go from playing 200 capacity venues to a legendary 20,000 capacity venue in such a short amount of time.

My recent favorite Halsey moment was when she was both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live back in 2019. That day was so iconic and I remember how excited she was to host! It was so amazing to see her venture into acting and absolutely nail all the sketches and her opening monologue. Her two performances were also incredible and truly some of my favorites from her career so far.

Her performance of ‘Without Me’ was heartbreaking yet so powerful at the same time. It was amazing to see her take back her power on that stage, after going through something so awful extremely publicly, and I was so proud of her during that moment. Her other performance of ‘Eastside’ was also one of my favorites because it showcased her other love, which is art! Like come on who else paints a portrait upside down, live, on SNL…no one but her and I absolutely love her for that!

What makes Halsey different from other pop stars in the world right now?

Photo courtesy of: imnothalsey | IG

I think the main factor that differentiates Halsey from other artists in the world right now is just how much she cares. She is an empath to her core, and I know she always talks about it like it’s a flaw (I’m calling you out ma’am!) but it’s truly a beautiful thing to witness. I have never seen another artist at her level of fame care so much about every little detail of everything. Whether that be the colors of her lights on stage, or her visuals, or the concept behind a music video, or what type of food is gonna be handed out at an event (like come on the clementine flavored cotton candy at the Manic the Experience event – amazing!)

Halsey cares about everything and it is never taken for granted. She also cares so much about all the people around her. She genuinely treats her fans like friends and tries to get to know as many of us as possible on a personal level, in person and online, and I find that so incredible. Halsey remembers everything, and when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING. She has magical powers I swear her memory is insane. She pours her soul into each project she tackles and is the true definition of an artist, in all aspects, which is what I think separates her from everyone else.

If you could say one thing to Halsey, what would you say?

I’d say: CONGRATULATIONS ON RELEASING YOUR 3RD ALBUM BB! It has been a journey and I am so proud of you for releasing something so raw and honest out into the world. Manic is a masterpiece and I know this album will stick with me forever. Everything from the lyrics, to the melodies, to the production, to the art work, to the music videos, to the interactive events, and so on was perfect. It is a body of work like no other and I honestly feel everything that you are saying to my core. Secondly, I’d just want to say thank you. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for me and the rest of your fans and loved ones.

All the hard work and effort you put into everything does not go unnoticed and I appreciate you SO much. More than I can even put into words. Thank you for helping me to learn to accept myself and my sexuality, for teaching me that it’s okay to have a mental illness, and overall just helping me grow as a person. You have been the soundtrack of my life for so long now and I truly wouldn’t have it any other way. It has been an honor to grow up with you and continue to see you shine! I love you forever and always and I am so proud of you! I hope I get to hug you again soon and see you on tour!
