‘Fan Account of the Month’ (#FAOTM) is a fan-appreciation series on UMUSIC!
At UMUSIC, we acknowledge and value the efforts of fans from around the world. The passion, dedication, and love fans have for their favourite artists is something the team at UMUSIC has admired for a long while. For this reason, UMUSIC has decided to feature a fan account every month. This will give our UMUSIC community the opportunity to learn about different fandoms, their hardworking members, and more about the artists!
Fan account: A social media account created by a fan dedicated to a particular piece of pop culture. This series will focus on fan accounts dedicated to artists.
Update account: A fan-run social media source for fan accounts. An update account serves as the main source of updates on a specific artist. An update account will gather all media, promotional items, and information on an artist and share the information with other fans. Think of update accounts as a constantly updated Wikipedia for fans. This series will also focus on update accounts, which are simply larger fan accounts.

June’s fan account of the month features a Sam Smith fan account: addictedsam! The account is run by Nienke from the Netherlands, a fan who discovered Sam’s powerful voice on the radio in February of 2016 and has been their fan ever since. Running addictedsam is one of the many ways Nienke is able to show her love, appreciation, and admiration for the ‘To Die For‘ artist.
The team at UMUSIC asked Nienke questions pertaining to Sam, their newest music, and fan culture. Below are a collection of her answers:
Why are you a fan of Sam?
There are so many reasons why I love Sam. The thing I love most about Sam is how they dare to be themselves, and how they encourage others to do the same. They are fearless. I’m sure Sam is quite a vulnerable person but they still decide to do whatever they want to do. They choose to be themselves and I’m really proud of Sam for just that.
Describe Sam’s music in one word.
Angelic.
Can you describe your journey supporting Sam?
I heard songs like ‘Stay With Me’, ‘Like I Can’, and other hits on the radio constantly. I liked them all so much that I decided to look up the artist, which was Sam Smith. I started becoming a fan more and more, and in February 2016 I decided to open my fanpage on Instagram. Ever since then I’ve met amazing people and got to achieve my biggest dreams.
How would you describe Sam Smith fans and the wonderful community you’ve all built?
The Sam Smith fandom is an amazing community! Everyone is really supportive towards each other and we are all there for each other when someone needs it. When Sam releases something new, we are all very hyped and excited. We share all of these emotions with each other. I feel very close to many fans and I’m very glad I got to be apart of such a beautiful community.
Has Sam ever interacted with your account?
Yes, they have! Sam follows me since 2018 and they have messaged me a few times. They have also liked and commented multiple times on my posts and they have mentioned me in their story a few times. I’m very, very grateful for everything. Not just for Sam’s interactions, but for every follower I have. It means a lot to me. 🙂
Has your account participated in or started any fan projects?
I have! So far I’ve done 2 videos with quite some fans from all over the world for Sam’s birthday. But my biggest project was a project regarding a fanbook.
In 2018, I made a book with messages and artworks from loads of fans. My hard work payed off and I got in contact with a close friend of Sam’s. At the concert I went to in Amsterdam on May 2nd, I got to meet up with Sam’s PA at the time. I gave the book to her and Sam reached out to me the following day!
Do you have a favourite Sam collaboration?
I honestly love all of them, it’s hard to choose haha! ‘Latch’ with Disclosure is one of my all time favourites. ‘Pray’ ft. Logic is a song that’s also very special to me. I think Logic has a very different style (rap) than Sam, but the collaboration between the two worked out really well!
Sam’s latest collaboration with Demi Lovato for the song ‘I’m Ready’ is also one of my favourites. Their voices fit together perfectly!
What makes Sam different from other artists in the world right now?
Sam is an icon in the LGBTQ+ community and many other communities. They are supportive towards everyone and are very engaged with their fans. Sam truly loves their fans. They also remain humble and kind; the fame didn’t get to them and they clearly don’t misuse their fame.
Sam uses their platform to speak up about subjects that aren’t spoken about often. An example of this is the issues around body image and the influence that social media has on this. Sam does this very well and they help a lot of people with loving themselves for who they are.
If you could say one thing to Sam, what would you say?
I would want Sam to know that I truly love them so, so deeply. And I always will. I’m incredibly proud of them and I hope they get whatever their heart needs, because they truly deserve it all. Sam, please keep on being you.

@samsmithbatch is an amazing artist and she works really hard on her artworks for Sam / @sam_is_our_inspiration is very creative and she comes up with great ideas for her fanpage / @samsmithisrael is a very hardworking fanpage.
