LISTEN TO ‘DANCING WITH THE DEVIL…
THE ART OF STARTING OVER’ OUT NOW
‘Fan Account of the Month’ (#FAOTM) is a fan-appreciation series on UMUSIC!
At UMUSIC, we acknowledge and value the efforts of fans from around the world. The passion, dedication and love fans have for their favourite artists is something the team at UMUSIC has admired for a long time. For this reason, UMUSIC has decided to feature a fan account every month. This will give our UMUSIC community the opportunity to learn about different fandoms, their hardworking members and more about the artists!
Fan account: A social media account created by a fan dedicated to a particular piece of pop culture. This series will focus on fan accounts dedicated to artists.
Update account: A fan-run social media source for fan accounts. An update account serves as the main source of updates on a specific artist. An update account will gather all media, promotional items, and information on an artist and share the information with other fans. Think of update accounts as a constantly updated Wikipedia for fans. This series will also focus on update accounts, which are simply larger fan accounts.

April’s fan account of the month features a Demi Lovato fan account, @justcatchmedemi, run by six different people based all around the world. The contributors include Mel from Canada, Gabe from Italy, Beth from the UK, Lena from Brazil, and Dom and Cleo both from the US. Most of the members have been Demi stans for 10+ years, and decided to create the account back in October of 2010. This committed group provides fans with news and updates about Demi’s releases and appearances, along with music certifications, interviews and quotes via Twitter.
The team at UMUSIC asked the justcatchmedemi crew questions pertaining to Demi Lovato and her latest projects, influence and fan culture. Below are a collection of their answers…
Why are you a fan of Demi Lovato?
Mel – I ask myself the same question every day. I’m kidding, it really just comes down to her music. It changed my life and I haven’t been able to escape her since.
Gabe – Besides her music and vocal ability, I just love how honest she always is.
Dom – She’s so funny like…there is never a dull moment. Ever.
Cleo – Her sense of humour and her kind heart are among the many reasons why I am a fan of hers to this day. Not to mention the transparency in her music.
Beth – So many reasons, but to name a few…her honesty musically and personally, her caring soul, and her hilarious sense of humour.
Lena – I love how well she expresses herself through her art and how she’s able to turn her pain into incredible bodies of work. Also, she’s so incredibly funny and just a really nice person overall.

How did it all begin? Can you describe your journey supporting Demi?
Mel – If I’m being honest, I don’t actually remember how it all began. That said, I started engaging with other fans when I made this account and when Letters to Demi was born – a tumblr page which later became a website that has since been deactivated – where those from all over the world could leave notes of support for Demi when she entered treatment in 2010. The initiative was written about in J-14 Magazine and Demi’s mom said she was printing all the messages and putting them in a book. I’d say this was my real initiation into the fandom.
Gabe – I’ve always liked Demi, ever since Camp Rock. I actually became obsessed with her in 2011 right after she released her third album, ‘Unbroken.’ I loved every song on that album so much that I started looking into her and I instantly fell in love with her.
Dom – I fell in love with her as a little girl while watching As The Bell Rings, and now I’m permanently attached to her.
Cleo – Demi has been a huge thing in my house since the Camp Rock days. It was the start of it all. I was quite young when it was first released, but still a fan nonetheless. As I got older, my support grew bigger and bigger. From buying her music, merchandise, concert tickets and her old (sadly missed) skincare line Devonne By Demi, to recently joining this update account, to even supporting her journey from afar. Seeing her journey is something that I’ll always be grateful for because I’ve had the pleasure of growing up watching Demi grow as a person, and honestly, that is one of my favourite parts about these past 10+ years. Her overcoming her downsides in life has got me through my downsides, teaching me many lessons along the way. I will forever support her. I am very eager to see what the future holds for our never ending journey with her.
Beth – Disney Channel was my entire life in the 2000s, so I watched every tv show and movie, listened to all of the songs on youtube, and Demi just stuck with me as I got older. I just loved her and her music so much. Then I made my Twitter account and it all went from there. Fast forward to the 2016 Future Now Tour, Melissa was recruiting for the tour and i’m still here!
Lena – I was going through a very hard time in my life when I first heard about her. Reading what she had gone through and how she overcame everything gave me hope that I could do the same. Her songs kept me safe for many, many years. I’ve been a stan for 7 years, so it’s definitely been a wild journey.
How would you describe Demi fans and the fandom as a whole?
Mel – Chaotic, but really passionate.
Gabe – There’s so many type of fans, just like in every fandom, but overall I’d say they’re really passionate.
Dom – Passionate, crazy and funny.
Cleo – No Demi fan is the same. Some are more on the sweet side, some are more sarcastic. The one thing we all have in common is that we love our girl Demi and will ride with her to the end.
Beth – Talented, hilarious and protective.
Lena – Incredibly chaotic, but very funny and dedicated.

What is your favourite song off ‘Dancing With The Devil…The Art Of Starting Over’?
Mel – At the moment, it’s “Lonely People.”
Gabe – “The Way You Don’t Look At Me”
Dom – “The Art of Starting Over”
Cleo – Right now, it is “California Sober,” but it changes multiple times a day.
Beth – It’s hard to pick just one! I have a top 5 kinda? “Melon Cake,” “California Sober,” “Lonely People,” “Sunset” and “The Kind Of Lover I Am.”
Lena – A tie between “Met Him Last Night” and “The Art Of Starting Over.”
Describe the ‘DWTDTAOSO’ era in one word.
Mel – Wild
Gabe – Weird
Dom – There’s an era? The pandemic took that away.
Cleo – Unpredictable
Beth – Chaotic
Lena – Cathartic

What’s your favourite Demi moment?
Mel – Definitely performing “Anyone” at the GRAMMYs, but if we’re talking about my favourite thing Demi has done in general, I would say #FindConfident. In 2015, to promote her album ‘Confident,’ Demi hid these small black boxes in the cities she visited. I remember sitting in Jack Astor’s when the post for where Toronto’s was hidden went up (see here). I had never ran somewhere so fast. My friend and I searched Ryerson University and managed to find it (see here). It was chaotic, but a lot of fun too.
Gabe – The Demi era in 2013. I’ll never forget that year.
Dom – When she first revealed her “stay strong” tattoos!
Cleo – I think, for me, it was the moment she got a standing ovation at the GRAMMYs. It was a very deserved moment. I’ll never forget the look on her face.
Beth – The first thing that came to my mind was when she got her first GRAMMY nomination in 2016 and then a few nights after, she had a concert in Brazil. Fans held up signs that said “YOU DID IT #GRAMMYS” and when she turned to look at the screen to see what everyone was screaming about, the way her face lit up and her fist punched the air was everything!! Also, her standing ovation at the 2020 GRAMMYs!!
Lena – Her “Anyone” performance at the 2020 GRAMMYs.
Do you have a favourite Demi collaboration?
Mel – I’m going to have to go with “Easy” with Noah Cyrus.
Gabe – “We’ll Be A Dream” with We the Kings.
Dom – A tie between “Easy” and “My Girlfriends Are My Boyfriends.”
Cleo – Definitely “Met Him Last Night” with Ariana Grande.
Beth – All of the female collabs from this recent album, plus “Lonely Hearts” with JoJo, and “Monsters” with All Time Low and blackbear. It’s so hard to choose favourites!!!
Lena – “Met Him Last Night”
What makes Demi Lovato different from other pop stars in the industry right now?
Mel – Demi is really passionate and she’s not afraid to speak her mind, which is rather refreshing for a celebrity. That said, it’s also why she can be misunderstood so often because the things she speaks up about are often taken out of context or misinterpreted. But she has a really great heart. It’s beautiful to see someone being so transparent and no matter how much people troll her, she keeps her head up and helps those she knows she can help.
Gabe – Demi is just an open book. She says whatever’s on her mind 24/7. It makes it easier for some people to hate on her, but it’s actually one of her best qualities in my opinion. That’s why I’m still a fan after 10 years!
Dom – She doesn’t care too much about her status on the charts or as a celebrity in general. She’s an A list celebrity who is more focused on the squirrels in her backyard.
Cleo – She isn’t focused on chart placements at all. Her main focus has always been bringing awareness to various topics, regardless of backlash or not. She’s the type of celebrity that would risk her reputation to allow voices to be heard and/or to stand up for what she believes in. You know, then there’s the fact that she lays in her backyard feeding squirrels out of pure enjoyment for herself. It’s not everyday you see that.
Beth – She isn’t afraid to speak her mind and to speak up for things that she’s passionate about, especially when she knows people are not going to like it. She’s completely transparent about the things she’s gone through. Knowing trolls will use it against her, she still continues to do it because she knows it’s going to helps others.
Lena – I feel like Demi doesn’t really care about how other people see her as long as she’s getting to help others and make the world a better place. She always speaks her mind and is incredibly straightforward and kind.

Have you ever met Demi? If not, what would you say?
Mel – Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to meet her. I may have skipped school to head downtown to attend MuchMusic’s New.Music.Live. in order to do so.
Gabe – Kind of. I saw her outside of her hotel in Cologne in 2018 during the Tell Me You Love Me Tour. She took photos with fans, but unfortunately ignored me. I’d probably tell her how much I love her and how her music has helped me through all these years.
Dom – Yes, I was able to finally afford a meet and greet during her Tell Me You Love Me Tour back in 2018.
Cleo – I unfortunately have not. If I were to meet her, I would tell her that I love her and that I’m very grateful for her. I would also ask for a hug afterwards.
Beth – I have not unfortunately. I’d probably tell her who I am, considering we’ve exchanged a few words over the years from my fan account, so I could finally put my face to the account and then hopefully make her laugh.
Lena – No, I would probably just compliment her and call her a bad bitch.

Are there any other Demi Lovato fan accounts you would recommend?
afterglowlovato and demichronological on Instagram.

The UMUSIC team would like to thank Mel, Gabe, Beth, Lena, Dom and Cleo of justcatchmedemi and all of the Demi fans for the hard work they put into their accounts. Your compassion, aesthetics and humour do not go unnoticed.
