‘Fan Account of the Month’ (#FAOTM) is a fan-appreciation series on UMUSIC!
At UMUSIC, we acknowledge and value the efforts of fans from around the world. The passion, dedication and love fans have for their favourite artists is something the team at UMUSIC has admired for a long time. For this reason, UMUSIC has decided to feature a fan account every month. This will give our UMUSIC community the opportunity to learn about different fandoms, their hardworking members and more about the artists!
Fan account: A social media account created by a fan dedicated to a particular piece of pop culture. This series will focus on fan accounts dedicated to artists.
Update account: A fan-run social media source for fan accounts. An update account serves as the main source of updates on a specific artist. An update account will gather all media, promotional items, and information on an artist and share the information with other fans. Think of update accounts as a constantly updated Wikipedia for fans. This series will also focus on update accounts, which are simply larger fan accounts.

May’s fan account of the month features the fan account, @olivison, run by five people internationally to keep fans updated on all things Olivia Rodrigo. The contributors are Lucy from the UK, Eva from Uruguay, as well as Lexi, Sasha and Nicole all from the US. From some long time fans to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series fans, this group came together to celebrate Olivia and her career achievements. The account has been keeping fans updated for 5+ years on not only all things Olivia but also actress, Madison Hu.
The team here at UMUSIC asked olivison some questions about the meaning of the ‘SOUR’ era, Olivia stan culture, her influence and their connection. Below are a collection of their answers…
Why are you a fan of Olivia Rodrigo?
Lexi – I am a fan of Olivia because of the person that she is. She is incredibly talented both in music and film, but her energy, openness, kindness, and the way she cares about the world as a PERSON is what drives me to support her on a daily basis. She speaks up for what’s right and for what she believes in and she is open in her music about what she is going through. The determination she puts into her work whether that be music or film, always shows, making it like no other.
Lucy – I am a fan of Olivia because she brings so much light into this world! She is so honest, vulnerable, kind and also so funny. I just admire her so much. I’ve never been able to relate much to the other people I look up to as they have always been a lot older than me, whereas with Olivia, I love that we are the same age. I think it’s very telling of a person when everyone that meets them only ever has good things to say about them, and that’s what it’s like with Olivia.
Sasha – I think as a girl who was just becoming a teenager and trying to figure out who she wanted to be, I instantly gravitated towards Olivia’s energy. She’s such a kind person, and even though I’ve never met her, that fact’s very clear. Throughout the years, I’ve been able to essentially grow up with her, and I’ve only become more of a fan. I’ve got to see how she’s handled certain situations, her resilience and compassion.
Eva – Because she has helped me to love myself more and find a safe place where I can be myself.
Nicole – I am a fan because her music is just so perfect and meaningful to me. She is so talented and she inspires me to be productive – hard work does pay off.
How did it all begin? Can you describe your journey supporting Olivia?
Lexi – I started supporting Olivia right when Bizaardvark began to air. It’s been so amazing to grow with her and to see her grow. We are around the same age, I’m 18, so it was amazing to see someone so young doing all of these amazing things, especially since I was working to be an actor. I’ve gotten to see her fan base grow a TON. It’s been great to see her journey and I’m proud to see how far she’s come. When we started out on the page, it was like this small little community of love and now it’s grown into millions of people who are supporting her, which is insane. I’m just lucky I got the chance to watch that evolution and to be with her in those beginning steps.
Lucy – Growing up, I was a huge High School Musical fan, so when i heard about High School Musical: The Musical: The Series coming to Disney+, I was so intrigued. I watched the show as soon as it aired and I immediately fell in love with Olivia’s acting and her voice. It went on from there and i have loved every single minute of supporting her ever since!
Sasha – It was so long ago, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment I became a fan. I was so young when I found Liv, but I remember I think that was right around the time I moved and I was terrified to start at a new school, and I didn’t have any friends. So after school, to lift up our moods, my twin and I would watch her Disney show Bizaardvark along with co-star and friend, Madison Hu. That show never failed to make us laugh and we needed it at that time in our lives. When we discovered fan accounts, we knew we had to create one for her.
Eva – I saw some TikToks about “All I Want” and I immediately fell in love with her voice. I watched HSMTMTS that same night. The journey has been insane; from meeting people all around the world to interacting with Olivia and managing multiple updates accounts as well as my personal.
Nicole – When I first watched An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success, I didn’t realize that would be the start of my journey of supporting Olivia. All I remembered was that I really enjoyed her in it. It wasn’t until Bizzardvark where I was like, “omg I know that girl! she was in that American Girl movie,” and it went on from there. So when she was starring in the new Disney+ series, HSMTMTS, I just had to watch it. That series is what inspired me to create a fan page where I would post my fan art, which eventually lead me to run this account. When she started putting out music, I immediately fell in love with it; listening to it on repeat, etc. She is my most listened to artist of all time, “drivers license” is my most listened to song of all time and I’m sure I will be listening to ‘SOUR’ on repeat.
How would you describe Olivia fans and the fandom as a whole?
Lexi – The Olivia fandom is SO devoted. They are excited and enthusiastic. Like I said, it has grown into MILLIONS of people who just love and support her so much and who just really want her to know that.
Lucy – Supportive – of Olivia and also of each other. I have met so many incredible people who are all so kind and who I feel so comfortable around. It has been so lovely to watch Olivia grow and become so successful alongside everyone else. We are like one big family.
Sasha – Oh they’re truly amazing. I’ve had a few accounts over the years, and you really can’t say that about some of the fandoms I’ve seen or been a part of. In this fandom, it doesn’t matter who you are or how many followers you have. I can’t speak for others but during this entire journey, I’ve never felt left out or that another account or owner was better than me or thought they were. Everyone in this fandom is so welcoming; there is not a single person that is not welcome here, because this fandom sees the beauty in diversity and I love that so much.
Eva – Chaotic. We have our moments of disagreeing but the ones I’ve known since last year, before all the craziness of “drivers license,” have helped me find a comfortable place.
Nicole – Well like every fandom, there are a lot of crazy fans, but the majority of fans are really sweet and caring and just supportive. There are always going to be arguments and toxic stans, that is just a fact that exists in every single fandom in existence (spoken from someone who is also a part of the mcyt and other gaming fandoms). But overall, this fandom is literally so supportive of Liv and each other. I have met some of what I would consider my closest friends through this fandom (shout out to Chela if you are reading this). This fandom is a safe place to obsess over song lyrics, share fan art, edits, etc. I am just glad to be a part of the fandom.
What is your favourite song off ‘SOUR’?
Lexi – This is so hard!! Based on lyrics, I would definitely have to say “brutal” because I relate to that so much and Olivia’s honesty is so valued. “traitor” is also BEAUTIFUL.
Lucy – Ever since my first listen, it has been “favorite crime”! Closely followed by “jealousy, jealousy.” The whole album overall is incredible and I am so proud of Olivia for creating such a versatile album.
Sasha – I’ve listened to “drivers license” about a thousand times, as I’m sure most of you have, but I think that “1 step forward, 3 steps back” has to be my favorite because while a lot of people can relate to these songs, this is the one that I can relate to the most.
Eva – After my first listen, “brutal” got my heart! I just love all of it, but the whole album is 10/10.
Nicole – “brutal.” 100% “enough 4 u” is a close second. Honestly, every single song could be my favorite, but “brutal” just stands out. Even through I haven’t personally been in a relationship, I can still relate to it, same with “enough 4 u.”
Describe the ‘SOUR’ era in one word.
Lexi – Vulnerable.
Lucy – The thing I love about ‘SOUR’ is that everyone is able to relate in some way or another; whether it’s relating to the heartbreak or the constantly comparing yourself to someone else. Olivia has been so open and vulnerable, and it has made her songwriting an act of explanation which I love. I think that’s why so many people admire and look up to Olivia.
Sasha – Monumental.
Eva – Scary, because you want to keep Olivia as our little secret but she also deserves all the love and recognition she is getting so it’s a lot, especially with many new stans joining!
Nicole – Ecstatic. I remember being so happy when I saw that “drivers license” was breaking records because I remembered that when I first heard it on Liv’s insta back in July, i fell in love with it and I knew the world needed to hear it . So seeing her get all this attention really just makes me so happy, because she is so talented and she deserves all the recognition she is getting.
What’s your favourite Olivia moment?
Lexi – My favorite Olivia moments are always when she is with her best friends, family, or doing something she loves. It’s no surprise that happiness is something that I want for her and something she deserves.
Lucy – Definitely the Brits performance. Not only was it special to me because she was performing in my country, but it was the first time she was able to perform “drivers license” to the public. Her performance was so beautiful and shoutout to her stylists, they killed it!
Sasha – There are truly so many, it’s hard to pick a single favorite. But one of my favorite and most memorable moment was the first time that she was recognized by her inspiration, Taylor Swift. As a fan, that was such a proud moment for us because all of us know what Taylor means to her, because that’s what she means to us. So seeing Liv get that recognition was such an exciting moment for her, and such a hopeful moment for fans that hope to get recognized by Liv in the same way. We were all very happy to see that happen for her.
Eva – The Brits performance was insane, so was the SNL one.
Nicole – SNL performances or performing at the Grammy’s Studio.
Do you have a favourite Olivia music video?
Lexi – This is not a music video, it’s a lyric video BUT I really wanted to mention this song from ‘SOUR’ because it really spoke to me and the new lyric video just came out! I loved and I mean LOVED “hope ur ok.” The lyrics hit so hard and when I was hearing myself in the music, it made me feel like I had someone looking out for me. I hope that’s how we make her feel.
Lucy – Definitely “good 4 u”! It gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. Petra and Olivia did so well creating it!
Sasha – I’m a nostalgic person, so the “All I Want” music video will always be one of my favorites because it was really her first viral song. It was so odd to me, because I’d been supporting her for so many years and then suddenly, everyone knew and supported her as well. I remember hearing “All I Want” when I was with friends and in public places and was like, woah, it’s not just a few of us anymore.
Eva – “good 4 u”!!! She is insane in that music video, it was soo good!!
Nicole – “good 4 u”! I just loved it so much, and every detail put into it was amazing.
Which new Olivia merch item do you like best?
Lexi – ‘SOUR’ tracklist long-sleeve is SO CUTE!!
Lucy – It’s really hard to give one specific answer because I love so many items. But I definitely think what stands out to me are the tops. I love that there are so many different styles and designs to choose from. I think it’s very clear that it’s Olivia’s merch, as the designs really represent her own style, which I absolutely adore!
Sasha – The ‘SOUR’ Diary Journal, because I know a lot of people her age or younger support her and may be going through something or have normal teenage problems. So it’s really cool to know we can write those things down in something that she helped create. The idea of that is so beautiful to me!
Eva – The hoodie that comes with the box set, and of course her signed cd!
Nicole – The bracelet, because it is just so adorable and cute!

What makes Olivia Rodrigo different from other pop stars in the industry right now?
Lexi – As I mentioned before, it’s her vulnerability, but it’s also the way that she cares about what’s happening in the world and how she is willing to fight for it. You don’t see that often, especially in someone so young. I can empathize with how much pressure she must feel, yet she still fights for others in the process.
Lucy – Her honesty and vulnerability at such a young age. She is not afraid to put herself out there and take a few risks. She could’ve easily stuck to writing “sad ballads” after the success of “drivers license.” However, she proved that she is extremely versatile with the releases of “deja vu” and “good 4 u,” and it has really paid off.
Sasha – A lot of things; the bravery she has for speaking up against injustices, how at 18 she is so educated and you can tell that she’s constantly doing her best to learn so that she can use her platform to try and create change. That’s so powerful because the backlash from that is inevitable, but that never stopped her. I also love the way that she’s able to just essentially come off as a human being to most. It can be hard to see that side of people in the spotlight. She’s able to just write music, have people listen and enjoy it, and have that be the end of it. She’s not trying to create drama or anything. She’s just a teenager who likes hanging out with her friends and writing songs. She also happens to have, at this moment, 9.1M but she doesn’t let that number influence how she acts, and if she does, it’s in a positive way.
Eva – How much i connect with her. Since she is only a year older than me, I relate more to her lyrics because it’s also something that I’m going through!
Nicole – For me, it is because I watched her grow from when she first started acting. She is one of the few artists that I’ve been able to see grow, and that just makes it really special to me. Also, her songwriting is so raw and filled with pure talent and just so relatable. She has the power to make those who have never been in relationship feel the pain she is feeling with words, and I think that is just powerful.
Have you ever met Olivia? If not, what would you say?
Lexi – I haven’t, but hopefully one day! First I would say, “hey, I’m one of the twins who have been running @olivison and posting everything you do for 5 years.” lol BUT then I’d say that she’s appreciated. I’d thank her for what she’s doing, even if it feels overwhelming at times. I’d want her to know that underneath everything, I see her as a teenager, a person, who is still dealing with everything that everybody else is. And I’d tell her that even if she doesn’t feel like it, she’s doing great. I’d tell her to take care of herself and then I’d say, “I love you even though you have never met me before!!”
Lucy – Sadly not! Hopefully one day in the near future, I will! I often think to myself what I would say to her if i ever met her. I would definitely tell her how proud I am of her and how she’s changed so many peoples’ lives (not just mine) for the better. However, in the actual moment, I would probably freeze and forget my words, haha!
Sasha – I have never met Olivia but if I did, it would be very important to me that she knew that I had this account because it’s been such a big part of my life for so long. I’d want her to know that I was there when she hit 1M and so on. That August 29, 2017 (I’m not creepy, I checked the date, don’t worry), Liv went live and it was one of the first times I’d ever heard her sing. The first thing that I thought was that she should be a performer. But the thing that I would want her to know the most is that I love her and will always support her. Also that I hope she’s taking care of herself, because that’s the most important thing.
Eva – Sadly I haven’t. If i could, i don’t know what I would say. I would be too freaked out to do anything.
Nicole – I haven’t sadly. But if i ever did, I would tell her that I am obsessed with her music and how it was cool to see her grow into the artist she is today. As well as tell her she is a lyrical genius.

Lexi – So many! But definitely @oliviacharttracking is a great one!
Lucy – My favourite Olivia account is @OliviaRodrigoCloset on Instagram! The owner is so hardworking and that is made evident when looking at her account!
