20 November 2019 (Toronto, ON) – Verve Label Group/Universal Music Canada, the country's leading music company, is proud to celebrate Verve's 19 GRAMMY nominations including Best New Artist for Tank and the Bangas, who released their Verve Forecast/Universal Music Canada debut Green Balloon earlier this year.
Andrea Bocelli was nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Si (released via Sugar/Decca/Universal Music Canada), the album that earned the celebrated tenor his first #1 record on the Billboard Charts last year.
Verve Forecast artists J.S. Ondara and Madison Cunningham were both nominated for Best Americana Album for their respective albums Tales of America and Who Are You Now.
Decca Broadway, which relaunched earlier this year, celebrates the nomination of the revival of Oklahoma! for Best Musical Theater Album. Verve Label Group creative director Josh Cheuse was nominated for his art direction on 1963: NEW DIRECTIONS, the collection of John Coltrane’s 1963 Impulse! recordings, for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.
Women in classical music were represented well this year for Verve Label Group: rising composer Hildur Guðnadóttir received her first-ever GRAMMY nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for her work on the HBO series Chernobyl (Deutsche Grammophon) and Julia Wolfe’s masterpiece Fire In My Mouth (Decca Gold) was nominated for Best Engineered Album, Classical and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Violinist Nicola Benedetti received her first GRAMMY nominations for her collaboration with composer Wynton Marsalis for Violin Concerto in D Major (Decca Classics), which received two nominations for Best Classical Instrumental Solo and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Rising star conductor Mirga Gražinytė was nominated for the first time for her recording of the Weinberg Symphonies Nos 1 & 2 (Deutsche Grammophon) for Best Orchestral Performance, and pianist Yuja Wang was nominated for Best Classical Instrumental for her recording The Berlin Recital (Deutsche Grammophon).

Legendary classical label Deutsche Grammophon received additional nominations this year including Best Orchestral Performance and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s performance of NORMAN: SUSTAIN. John Williams’ arrangements for legendary violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter from the album Across The Stars were recognized with a nomination for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Hedwig’s Theme.” The recording of Wagner’s Lohengrin conducted by Christian Thielemann and starring Piotr Beczała was nominated for Best Opera Recording.
