Electronic Artist Pantha du prince creates original Satie rework

New e-single in Deutsche Grammophon series FRAGMENTS

01 APRIL 2022 (TORONTO, ON) - Deutsche Grammophon presents the 10th Erik Satie rework in its new genre-defying series, Fragments. Electronic artist Pantha du Prince’s take on Gymnopédie No. 3 will be released as an e‑single on 01 April 2022.

Hendrik Weber – better known as electronic solo act Pantha du Prince – has loved Satie since he was a child. ‘How he perceives the world and captures landscape in music feels magically familiar,’ the German musician explains. Like Satie, Pantha du Prince looks at music in unexpected ways. He’s not only a producer and composer but a conceptual artist too. And for his Fragment, he has chosen one of the composer’s most famous works, the Gymnopédie No. 3, a masterpiece in meditative mood.

Satie took the unusual title from an ancient Greek festival, the gymnopaedia, in which naked men danced, sang, and competed, but the word became his own. His Gymnopédie No. 3 is infused with the spirit of a serene dance, as a languid melancholy meanders over waltzlike chords. Pantha du Prince turns that hypnotic rhythm into an irresistible beat and atmospheric soundscape, punctuated by his signature sound of bells. ‘I wanted my connection to Satie’s spirituality to give shape to tones, sounds and textures that people would dance to today,’ he says. ‘It’s long been overdue: I want to inject people with enthusiasm for Satie, so he is rediscovered as a nightlife phenomenon that he himself celebrated.’
